Understand Meningococcal Disease
Review the epidemiology of serogroup B meningococcal disease outbreaks on U.S. university campuses, including vaccination response strategies, alongside practical guidance on recognizing and preventing bacterial meningitis within the collegiate athletic environment, including predisposing factors, transmission routes, and return-to-play considerations
Proven Management Strategies
reviews current evidence on adjunctive corticosteroid therapy in acute meningitis, including the physiologic rationale for early steroid administration, landmark clinical trial evidence in adult and pediatric bacterial meningitis, and how efficacy and safety vary across bacterial, tuberculous, viral, and cryptococcal etiologies.
Recognize the Signs
recognize the signs and risk factors of bacterial meningitis in the collegiate athlete, understand outbreak and vaccination response strategies used on university campuses, and discuss current evidence regarding adjunctive corticosteroid therapy with supervising physicians as part of a collaborative sports medicine team.

About This Course
Bacterial meningitis is an uncommon but potentially fatal condition to which collegiate athletes are disproportionately exposed due to close living quarters, shared equipment and water bottles, frequent travel, and high rates of physical contact. This course equips participants with the epidemiologic, clinical, and pharmacologic knowledge needed to support early recognition, prevention, and appropriate physician referral of bacterial meningitis in the collegiate athletic setting.
